Understanding the Four Elements
As recently as a few thousand years ago, Western scientists considered the whole earth to be made of 4 elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Even though science has taken a different turn, we can still use this ancient wisdom to make sense of the world.
Fire signs

As you can see, every fourth sign is a fire sign. If you were to connect them, they would form a perfect triangle, also known in astrological terms as a grand trine. In fact, this works for each of the four elements.
The fire signs are
Aries ,
Leo ,
Sagittarius
Fire symbolizes passion, energy, impulse, enthusiasm, inspiration, idealism, faith. Fire signs are the leaders and the cheerleaders of the zodiac. They provide us with much needed inspiration, motivation and creative energy.

A person with 2-4 planets in fire in her chart will be enthusiastic and idealistic, and could also be insecure, egocentric and impractical.
5 or more planets in fire appears deceptively quiet and shy until she feels safe enough to open up.
0-1 planets in fire indicates a person with a lower energy level who seeks out others to inspire or motivate her.
Earth signs

Earth signs are
Taurus,
Virgo,
Capricorn.
Earth represents practicality, stability, materialism, realism.
Practical and dependable, earth signs provide the resources necessary for the functions of life. There is usually a deep affinity with nature. Earth signs are the builders of long-lasting structures.

Someone with 2-4 planets in earth signs is resourceful and possesses talent in dealing with reality and material things, such as money, business, or crafts.
A person with 5 or more planets in earth signs can get so stuck in the material aspects of things that they do not see the deeper meanings.
A person with 0-1 planets in earth signs usually does not have to worry over finances. Bill Gates, for example. Although they do tend to be impractical and out of touch with their bodies.
Air signs

The air signs are
Gemini,
Libra,
Aquarius
Air symbolizes mental processes, language, intellect, reason, human communication and social relationships. Air signs provide the ideas that make things happen.

An airy chart represents a person with many ideas to share. He may lack grounding, however, and tries to do too many things at once.
5 or more planets in air in a chart often manifests as someone who feels disconnected from what is happening around her. People with 0-1 planets in air usually have no problem with the intellectual side of life and are often highly educated.
Water signs

Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio , Pisces
Emotion, psychism, mysticism, intuition.
Water signs are the “feelers,” the nurturers, the caretakers.

A person with 2-4 planets in water is a very sensitive and emotional person. He will have intuitive and even psychic abilities.
A person with 5 or more planets in water signs is so sensitive that she holds back, and may appear detached or aloof.
A chart with 0-1 planets in water does not mean the person has no feelings! In fact, they are quite emotional, although sometimes are out of touch with their feelings.
Each sign corresponds to an element (these are fairly well-known) and a modality (these are not so well known). The 3 modalities are cardinal, fixed, and mutable.

What do you mean exactly with “People with 0-1 planets in air usually have no problem with the intellectual side of life and are often highly educated.” ??
sorry I think I didn’t get it well….
2 · Molly · 20 June 2006
What don’t you understand, Shalla?
3 · shalla · 21 June 2006
in what way they have no problems in intellectual life and in what way they are highly educated…
I thought people with no signs in air instead had problems with intellectual things, problems in education and learning also…
4 · Molly · 21 June 2006
Elemental lacks are weird, Shalla--
I know a few people with no air, and they all hold advanced degrees. No problems learning at all. On the contrary, they are quite intelligent. The problems seems to be knowing what to do with their intellectual gifts.
People with no earth tend to have few problems with money and resources (Bill Gates for example). Again, the problem is knowing what to do with what he has.
People with no water tend to be quite perceptive and deeply emotional, but often don't know what to do about their feelings, or how to go about getting their needs met. It's doesn't indicate a lack of feeling or intuition. In fact, one of the greatest psychics I ever knew, one with gifts on par with Edgar Cayce, had no water in his chart.
No planets in an element seems to mean nothing standing in the way, no obstacles. It's the opposite of what you would expect. Weird, I know.
5 · Hannah Slattery-Quintanilla · 21 June 2006
Wow, that is weird. I didn’t realize that, but thinking on a few people I know, that makes sense.
6 · shalla · 22 June 2006
that explains many things to me—-the problem is, in other sites I found simple descriptions about it so this is why I was surprised…
thank you much for your answer :)

how do I know if I have a planet or not. can I get a book or a detailed guideline from you? I really need your help with these.
8 · JAI · 29 August 2009
I am air and he is water upon our first meeting (by phone) there was an instant attraction; (it was suppose to be business);when we actually met the energy that around us was strong..so strong I did not understand it . He recognized it as well.It was very overwhelming for me, a bit scary for the both of us. My spirit is strong as well as his, For the first time I had started understanding the power of the spirit/ mind and how it works. help me understand why is it so hard for us to come together.
Since meeting him I have lost alot of sleep and my thought process is of him 99 percent of the time. People have come in between us trying to keep us apart . but there is a loyalty unspoken between us. I need some understanding . thanks

Hi, I don’t understand the planets-thingy.
I mean how do you know how many planets you have and how to have it?
I am a cancer that means I belong to water. I read on somethings about signs, it said that my horoscope has something to do with the moon. Does the planet-thingy has something to do with it?
Or, it has to do with “planet-watching”.like if I am standing on west side of the eath then some planet appear to be on the west side too, means I have planets?
Tell ME PLS NEEDED TO KNOW.

Traditionally, AIR and FIRE connect best, then WATER with EARTH. Is it possible that a similar rising, moon, or even Mercury, Mars, Venus could offset the supposed “conflict” in elements? For ex: Pisces Sun w/ a Fire Sign Sun?
12 · Molly · 21 September 2009
I am an Aries Sun who has been with a Cancer Sun for almost 7 years. So yes. Rising and Moon particularly.

Hello
I have Sun/ Mars/ MErcury in Cancer and Pluto/ South Node/ Saturn in Scorpio
This give me 5 or more planets and points in water
I indeed appear detached and aloof, but I also have an earth rising sign and moon in same sign as this rising sign
16 · tiffany · 11 November 2009
is there a fifth element?
its spirit isn’t?
17 · remmel · 15 November 2009
Are “planets” limited to the true astronomical planets, or do they include the Moon? Sun? Midheaven? Rising?
For example, the fire in my chart is: Sun, Mercury, and Mars in Leo; Uranus and Ascendant in Sagittarius; nothing in Aries.
In your above descriptions, would this count as three (just the planets), four (planets+sun), or five (planets+sun+ascendant) ‘planets in fire’ ?
18 · David Weitzman · 25 November 2009
Thank you for the detailed article.
I used it for my project of four elements rings (one for each element). You can see it in the URL.

Hi Molly :)
Me again (Sun in Leo, Moon in Leo, Ascendant is Sagittarius)
Just going through the what the number of planets of each element indicates and I noticed that for Air you have explained 0-1 planets and 5 or more but not 2-4? Just wondering if you could say what 2-4 means please :)
Thanks
25 · Kate · 13 April 2010
I also wanted to say that the 5 or more fire planets description fits me well. I used to think that I wasn’t entirely a Leo as I am usually shy and very quiet not “out there”. Even though I knew that Astrology isn’t straight cut and that being Leo wouldn’t explain everything about me I was still ignorant about how complex this all is. I used to think that maybe because I was supposed to be born in September therefore a Virgo that would have influenced me. But nope here it explains exactly what I am like. Once I am comfortable with people I am around, trust them and feel safe/secure to express my ideas I turn into a chatterbox and might not shut up (as the length of this comment might demonstrate…? haha).
So thanks again for this great website-really explains things and peaks my interest in Astrology.

Hi Molly! I’ve been interested in astrology for awhile, and I’ve never been able to figure my dominant element. I’ve always found my chart to be so strange, every element’s present, lots of squares, as well as trines. It’s clear Cap is the most common, and I see some Capricorn in me, but the hermitness I would assume that would create is very much not present in my chart. Is this because it conjucts my Uranus and Neptune, making a new kind of Cap? As well, I see Scorpio the most in me but it is only my rising and pluto. Is this because it creates so many other aspects (opposed mars, square venus, conjuct pluto..) as well as its associations kind be found throughout the rest of the chart (like libra dwelling on relationships, sensuality of taurus, seemingly aloofness of aquarius, hyper mind of sag, ambition of cap, passion of leo)?
I understand this is an extremely heavy question, but what signs would be best for me? When I research synastry I find signs that would be best for me and extremely passionate (Taurus, Scorp, Leo, Aquarius, Aries, and Cancer) but also make terrible squares, while those that are just harmonious (Gemini, for example, that trines my moon and venus, and doesn’t harshly aspect anything else) are passionless and boring. Lastly, what planet dominates my chart?
Ascendant- 12 Scorpio
Sun- 16 Capricorn
Moon- 11 Libra
Mercury- 24 Sag
Venus- 2 Aquarius
Mars- 27 Taurus
Jupiter- 11 Leo (Midheaven)
Saturn- 26 Capricorn
Uranus- 10 Capricorn
Neptune- 14 Capricorn
Pluto- Scorpio
27 · Molly · 10 June 2010
Hi Joey – Compatibility is very complex. It is hard to say what works best for you. It also depends on what you are looking for. I needed a settled home life, so the compatibility in my relationship centers on the Moon. I have seen others for whom it is different.
I would be happy to read your chart in a personal consultation.

Very interesting … I don’t know a lot about these 4 four elements (actually, I don’t know much about astrology to begin with) so I’m wondering what you mean by “(number) planets in (one of the 4 elements)” Example: 0-1 planets in air sign

I myself am a water sign, my husband of 11yr is also a water. We have three children One Earth, and two Air, we all fit our signs to a T, we all have our days but mostly we flow together very smooth. I think it’s a great flow of understanding, Love, and compassion that makes anything work, but that’s the water in me.

“In fact, one of the greatest psychics I ever knew, one with gifts on par with Edgar Cayce, had no water in his chart.”
Doesn’t Edgar Cayce have 4 elements in water (all Pisces, in 8th house) and North Node there as well?
Sorry I’m just a bit confused.

Hi Molly,
I was looking at your tutorials and I can’t seem to figure out which tutorial to figure out my dilemma. I’m a Sagittarius on the cusp of a Scorpio and very clearly both traits. Scorpio’s element is Water and Sagittarius is Fire so I’m confused on how to figure out how many planets I have in each element (?). Initially I was just trying to figure out which Astrology signs both Scorpio and Sagittarius get along with best but now I’m just confused and interested in figuring this all out!

Hi Molly.
I’m really into elements and star signs and readings and astrology but I cant/dont know how to find my chart. what planets I have in it and so on. I know my star sign (aries) and my element (fire) but that’s all. I was wondering if there is a website or similar that could tell me my chart?
thanks X

hey molly, i have no earth sign in my chart, but have virgo in 2nd, cap in 6th, and taurus in 10th. can that possibly lead to me being “over practical” to make up for the lack of earth element in my chart. btw fire is most dominant element in my chart and im not good with money either.
44 · Amy · 18 May 2011
I have 4 Fire, 3 Water, 2 Earth and 1 Air. Does having 2 Earth mean I am more resourceful than someone who has 4 Earth? Or are they equal?
45 · Jason E · 19 July 2011
Interesting article, I have mainly fire and air myself, And consider myself shy, In the past Ive at least fairly often been described as quite by others as well.
the main point of this article may not apply to me though, I have Sun/Mercury and mid-heaven in Sag, and Moon in Leo,Only my 2 luminaries and 1 planet in fire and not sure how much mid-heaven should be included in this for element distribution?
It may be worth noting though, that my Mars at 18 Aquarius is conjunct my rising at 23 Aquarius. also Mars/Jupiter and the Sun are all pretty active as far as aspects go, That might be totally unrelated, the Mars/Jupiter/Sun info that is, But it still seems worth at least mentioning considering Mars/Sun Jupiter are related to the fire element by sign rulership. Those aspects are mostly harmonious.
I wanted to leave my comments on the article even though I myself don’t have the specific 5 or more planets in fire the article is focused on.
46 · Jason E · 20 July 2011
Just realized I left my comment in the wrong thread, It was intended for the Lots and lots of Fire thread, Sorry about that.
Jason47 · Gar · 28 July 2011
I’m sorry, I don’t understand what is meant by
“A person with 2-4 planets in fire in her chart will be enthusiastic and idealistic, and could also be insecure, egocentric and impractical.
5 or more planets in fire appears deceptively quiet and shy until she feels safe enough to open up. 0-1 planets in fire indicates a person with a lower energy level who seeks out others to inspire or motivate her.”
What do “planets” mean?
And why at the end it says her? Is this only for women?
