Sun signs like oil and water: Are we doomed?

I really really really like a Taurus, but everything I read says that Gemini and Taurus are set for failure, what’s up with that? We get along so great and he’s not as domesticated as what the web sites read. I’m tired as I’ve been bouncing from relationship to relationship and I’m only 23, lol! But the thing is, I know what I want, I want him, but I want to know why Gemini and Taurus don’t work and if anyone has experienced this and knows why.

Jessica,
You have to take those Sun sign things with a grain of salt. Compatibility is complex and multifaceted, because it involves two entire charts, not just two Sun signs. Your Sun sign is just one square of the enormous patchwork quilt of your psyche, and how you click with another person depends not only on the Sun, but on the Moon, Venus, Mars and all the other planets, both in your individual charts and between them.
For every columnist who says a certain Sun sign combo can’t work, there’s a happy couple to prove them wrong. So don’t let a reductionist thing like Sun signs have you doubting what’s in your heart.
Take me for example. I’m an Aries with a Cancer man. Try reading up on that sometime! We are not “supposed” to work at all if you read the Sun sign rags. And it’s true that our temperaments are quite different. But our Moons are exactly conjunct, and there are other ties between our charts that reflect how we work well together as a couple despite differences in our basic character (shown by our Sun signs). We have been together nearly 4 years now.

I agree with Molly about generalisms. My most memorable relationship involved a woman whose natal Sun (27Vi26) was nearly conjunct my natal moon (27Vi21). This relationship rocked…per our emotions and per the books…but the other aspects (her Aquarian moon/Sag asc=need for total freedom grated against my Leo asc/Sco Sun=VERY strong personality) eventually split us.
Looking at the aspects gives insight into blendings and trouble spots (areas of improvements). Nowadays, I use the info to glean insight into managers and co-workers.

I’d like to make an observation. I know of a handful of couples whose sun signs are back to back – Cap/Aqu, Leo/Can, Aqu/Pis and they are longstanding marriages where there seems to be much affinity, in spite of ups and downs. In all of these relationships the females’ sun sign precede their husbands’ sun sign. Is there anything to this?
I myself (Aries/Can/Vir) am quite drawn to Taurean men. My first love was a Taurus. I’m always telling friends I want to marry a Taurus!
Only the best!

Hi Maire!
If you read Linda Goodman's Love Signs, at the beginning, she goes through and explains all the different possible relationships in terms of the number of signs away things are. KittyTaurus over at Celebrity Astroblogy doesn't think much of consecutive sign relationships. But she does understand that there is much more involved than the Sun sign.
As for the consecutive sign couples that you know, maybe it's coincidence?
Good luck with your future Taurus mate. I have been close to some Taureans, they are delightful, but what a handful! I forget who it was that said a Taurus is a nice Scorpio. :)

I am a Taurus with a Capricorn Moon and Sagittarius rising, married to a Capricorn with a Scorpio moon and Gemini rising…
My sun is the opposite of his moon, our ascendants are opposites, but that lovely stabilizing influence we both have in Capricorn brings it all together. Love that Capricorn influence! (Or, as my partner once said, “man, we spend so much time acting indignant and huffing and puffing!” He was dead right, too. It’s all a grandiose show some days. Love him to bits!
And as a Taurus, I can vouch not only that a Taurus is a nice Scorpio, but a Scorpio is often a nice Taurus. And vice versa and on and on we go…
You rock Molly!

I am a Cancer male and i ofted find myself having the hots for Gem girls
Gem and Aqua’s seem to do the trick always for me…
Don’t know what it is but i’m always hot for most Gem Girls…
They are so flirty, communicative; perfect to get the ‘shy’ Cancer male out of his shell

my first love was a male pisces. dont kno if he felt the same :( but i thort it was good while it lasted. my nboyfriend now is an aquarius male. ive never been with an aquarius before as i usually go for saggitariuses so its definitely different in a good way. so as i am a leo, im finding not many compatable male signs for me. Just wondering if me and my male aquarius will last the distance.

Just to comment on Maire’s observation: yes I did notice this, too. I’m an Aquarian and somehow I’ve always had the most intense relationships with Pisceans. It’s weird because I can’t stand them sometimes (too weepy/clingy) but no one quite touches me like they do.
It’s the same for my sister. She’s a Cap and is mock-complaining about her string of Aquarians. Maybe it IS just a coincidence, too, but what a interesting one, no?
Great site! First time I’ve been here, look forward to exploring it. :)

I am in love with a male Capricorn Sun, Scorpio Moon, Sag Rising. I am Aqua Sun, Aries Moon, Virgo Rising. What’s a girl to do? I love him so much, but continents keep us a part.

I agree about compatability being more complicated than just comparing sun signs, and I think it’s a bit harsh to say any relationship is doomed to failure. I think it’s more accurate to say it points out potential difficulties.
My grandma and grandad were a Taurus and a Gemini and they were married for 51 years. So anything is possible really.

Hi, ironically my partner and I are Gemini (me) and Taurus (he). While we do get along alright, we are quite opposite in expression. I will definitely tell him what I’m uncomfortable with, and dislike, he’s the opposite: keeps his feelings inside and seethes! That’s not easy to take for a Gemini! I think my sign unfortunately can loose patience ever so quickly. We take the “fight or flight” response too seriously! :) Otherwise, we have an amazing connection! Lots of passion, love, warmth and affection!

I think that one reason couples often form between adjacent signs is the likelihood that one partner has venus in the other partner’s sun sign. for example, if a male taurus is very attracted to gemini women, he may well have venus in gemini. I have several relatively calm taurus guy friends who constantly wonder why they’re attracted to interesting, intellectual, talkative, or sometimes downright crazy women.
I myself am an aries lady dating a taurus man going on three years. We are very in love, but it’s been a rocky road. He is diligent and stubborn at times (not helped by his ambitious capricorn mars), but his moon in leo trines my sun. My mars is also conjunct his sun in taurus, so we have a lot of chemistry, although we do get competitive sometimes!
To add another odd dimension to an already complicated issue, most of the men I’ve dated (including the taurus I’m currently with) have venus in gemini, and gemini is my rising sign. This is a mixed blessing, because they’re attracted to my talkativeness and intellectual side, but I have moon in pisces, so when I get sensitive or introspective they are very confused!

My parents were Taurus sun / Gemini moon and Gemini Sun / Taurus Moon. They were together until my father died… for about 22 years, if I remember correctly. They mostly did well… but my mother, the Gemini Sun, did have a temper… and my Taurus father would just take it and take it until he exploded. It was a bit of a cycle I guess. I can say that they loved eachother. They did really well of vacations… time out of the domestic routine was essential for them, and they would walk on the beach holding hands… things like that. Really very sweet.
Regardless… there are so many aspects that dictate the potential challenges in any relationship…. The sun sign is just one small piece of a very complex puzzle. Dont look to the stars to tell you there’s going to be trouble and then look for trouble… look to the stars to guide you when you need to understand why there is already trouble! In other words… if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Astrology isn’t the only law of the universe… just a map you can use if you lose your way.
Be happy.

Hi Molly,
I have a synastry question. I am wondering how you think Chiron interaspects work in synastry. At the moment I am particularly thinking on a Chiron conjunct Ascendant interaspect in my current relationship. Chiron is very prominent in my chart (handle to a my bucket), so I try to pay attention to it.
Any thoughts you want to share on this?
15 · Molly · 13 October 2009
Anya – I don’t consider Chiron to be a major player in synastry.

Though I am not an authority, with my little knowledge and experience with relatives and friends I feel basically we need to understand the Sun sign in question thoroughly. Just date of birth gives only the sign. We need to prepare and understand the interpretation of the Natal/Birth chart. This gives the placement of various planets in the Sun signs, the houses, the asteroids and nodes. Then the break up of the Elements(triplicity). Also midheavens need to be noted. That way some recommend stars, Chinese sign, numerology, Genetics and so on. Some problems we can even evolve through Graphology etc. Here we are talking about Astrology which is based on rules. 25% beleive in this. It is ok. The point is it is upto us to adjust and compromise with certain situations in life. It is never a smooth sailing to any one, people learn to overcome. It is tough but quite possible.
Earth Elements, and Water elements get along well and Air and fire Elements get along well.
Since opposites attract it is pretty easy to adjust and live with anyone. So have fun,all the best:)

In continuation of the above comment, Gemini is an Air element and Taurus an Earth element. Both need to learn from each other. I recommend to understand about the Elements and also to study individual Horoscopes :)
