Got this from my mom this morning:
On my way to the post office this morning I saw something in the road that I first thought was a blowing leaf or a piece of trash. It was a kittie. I stopped and picked it up, and it was scrawny and its eyes were crusted with pus and goo. I took it to the vet and $150 later I have a new kitten. She’s a calico (spotted) and I think I’ll name her Sadie. (for Sadie Hawkings—but you probably don’t remember Li’l Abner)! She’s polydactyl.
Doesn’t that little face just rip your heart out? The vet’s not sure she isn’t blind, although he can’t see anything wrong with her eyes (except for the infection).

Poooor kitty! But today’s her lucky day. I’m going to send some love and prayers her way. Hope you will too.

Update-- I called Mom this evening and the kitty has been eating like a champ and sleeping all day. Poor thing was famished and exhausted. But she got up when I was on the phone with Mom-- she has a healthy meow and an incredibly loud purr!2 · Mom · 18 October 2005
If I'd known Molly was going to publish this, I'd have corrected the punctuation!Sadie is doing better seems a bit more energetic this morning.

Oh what a sweet little fluff ball! Our most treasured and loyal pets seem to be the ones that needed us to take care of them. Or maybe the Universe knew that we needed them to help our lives be more fuller and more meaningful. (Yes I do remember Sadie Hawkins! We used to have school dances named Sadie Hawkins Dance. The tradition was that the girls got to ask the boys to the dance.)4 · Mom · 18 October 2005
Wasn't Sadie Hawkins Day in the fall? I think so, but I don't remember...5 · Molly · 19 October 2005
Here's a picture from this morning.
I went to see Mom and Sadie this afternoon after Mom told me her eyelids were looking worse. You can see how red they are. And they were so swollen!
I took some goldenseal powder over and made an ointment to put on her eyelids. After about an hour, the redness seemed to be less. But I'm still waiting to hear from Mom about how our little patient is doing.
I have never seen such a sick little kitty.

I'll be sending lots of healing thoughts over the cyber-waves her way.... animals really are a gift to humans...7 · Molly · 19 October 2005
Thanks, Katy! Here's another picture for ya:This is baby taking a noode on her tidder.
Te dut ate her tum nummies.
My mother speaks a special dialect with cats. My grandmother spoke it, and I suppose some day I will too. Translated: kitty is taking a snooze on her sister (me). She just ate some nummies (yummy food).
Mom says the eyes look a bit better. It's not a miracle recovery, but I guess not much happens fast during Mars retrograde. My prayer: that little Sadie continues to eat her nummies and gather strength, and beat dat naddy 'fection.

How cute! Hopefully the meds and herbs will help her poor little eyes. We were so poor some years ago and I found two little kittens with their eyes swollen like that and pasted shut from discharge. The poor mama cat was very wild and very, very sick too. The babies had matted coats with lots of stickers. I couldn't take them to the vet but had some eye medicine that we used for the kids, maybe pinkeye. Anyway, I also had some soyalac infant formula. Well the little kittens grew strong and healthy, the eye problems went away and for years ‘Soyalac' (the one kittens name) and the other little one lived with us. Of course we did have them spayed and neutered. With all that love, that little kitty should be doing really well soon.(Our Sadie Hawkins Day was usually in the spring in Southern California. I think they just needed a school dance inbetween Tinsel Time and Prom.)

pinkeye.. interesting.. I have heard of people getting great results treating pinkeye with rosemary infusion. Maybe Mom could try that if the goldenseal doesn't start working. Thanks for checking in, Maria! Always a pleasure to hear from you.

Molly's Mom, this lil' innocent kitty will be a mini-tiger handful when she gets older! Roaarr!Animals that I've found who've been on the proverbial “last legs” has ALWAYS grown into the most active, full of lust for life ball of fluff you can imagine..And loyal as all get out.
It's like they appreciate the gift of living more than animals that have been healthy all their lives.
Sadie Hawkins Dance, what an original moniker!
Astrologically, I'm assuming she is maybe 8 weeks old? A little Virgo baby?
Interesting how you two are applying herbal/natural remedies & you found her on the way to a post office..How Virgo :)

Sadie, sadie, beautiful baby ladyBringng joy, courage and play
To brighten many a human's day.
Grow ever stronger sweet one
Emissary of love
Teacher of Oneness
Reminding humans of the path
Many a non-human animal takes
To niggle memories that each one of us is
A part of the magnificent web and
There is enough for all.
Shine on Sadie!

Thanks Katy! And thanks Polly for the wonderful verse! Here's the most recent picture of Sadie at play. She is most definitely on the mend.
I just love her markings.. in particular the heart-shape on her side. Can you see it?
This one was taken Sunday. I went over to Mom's for my first knitting lesson. The well worn cliche about cats and yarn is very true. Partly because yarn is fun to watch; perhaps it resembles the movements of prey. And once yarn chasing grows tiresome, your lap stays still long enough for a really good nap.

Your little kitty is so cute. I was touched to read that you rescued her from the road and to know she didn't have to walk her journey alone. Are her eyes better? Is she eating okay?22 · Mom · 3 November 2005
She gained from 1.3 lb to 2.1 lb in a week! Her appetite is superb. Her eyes look normal now, and she's very playful. My other two cats are under-impressed, though, and only one of them tolerates her. The other one spends most of her time outdoors to avoid her. She's very playful, and in her down times she loves to snuggle. She sleeps under the covers with me at night and on my lap during the day. She's a real lover!
Thanks for your interest. Good vibes from all of you have helped her pull through!

Sad to say, SC, Sadie was hit by a car in June 2006. She is no more. But she was well loved in her short life.
