Solar and Lunar Eclipses

What is an eclipse?

The apparent path of the Sun and planets around the Earth (called the Ecliptic) and the Moon’s orbit around the earth are not parallel to one another. If you were to represent them using two hula hoops, you would cross them over in the middle, like this. (the angle is exaggerated here for effect.) The two paths intersect in two places. These points are called the Moon’s Nodes.
If the animation stops before you want it to, click the “reload” or “refresh” button on your browser.
An eclipse is a New or Full Moon that occurs near the Moon’s Nodes. Because the Moon and Sun are so close to the Nodes, they are aligned perfectly enough with the Earth to cast a shadow.
During a Solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth. During a Lunar eclipse, the Earth casts a shadow on the Moon.
What is the astrological significance of an eclipse?
First, consider the Full and New Moons. We get one each of these every month.
The New Moon is the beginning of the waxing phase of the Lunar cycle, or the two weeks when the Moon increases in light. We can use the energy of the increasing light of the Moon to plant seeds, both literally and figuratively. We start new projects, buy new things, make new contacts. Things we start in the world outside during this time tend to grow. Farmers use this time to plant above-ground crops.
A Solar eclipse is a very special New Moon. Things that are begun between the eclipse and the next Full Moon (about 2 weeks), seeds we plant, projects we undertake, contacts we make, and intentions we set, take on added significance 6 months down the road.
The Full Moon is the culmination of the Moon’s cycle, and the beginning of the waning phase. During the two weeks following the Full Moon, the Moon decreases in light. This is a good period for working on ourselves, finalizing things, processing information, wrapping up, and letting go of the things we don’t need anymore. This is a time for progress in the inner, rather than outer, realm. Farmers often use this time to plant root crops, which grow under the surface of the earth.
A Lunar eclipse is a very special Full Moon. Decisions we make, things we let go of, and things we finish during this waning cycle have significance in the future. It is an excellent time to give up an old habit, for example, smoking.
Full Moons in general, and Lunar eclipses in particular, are times of high emotion, and they bring awareness. The Sun and the Moon, our animus and our emotions, are on opposite sides of the sky, as if the other were a mirror. This is a time of mirroring, we can see ourselves in others if we are willing to look. Many are not.
Your homework assignment, should you choose to accept it:
The Solar Eclipse list
You can do this anytime between the Solar Eclipse and the next Full Moon. Take out a sheet of paper and a pen. Find yourself a nice quiet spot. On the paper, make a list of 100 things you want. Don’t hold back! Don’t let your inner voice tell you that you can’t have it. It will be hard to think of things after the first 50, but keep at it. Be positive: “I will get a raise,” not “I want a raise.”
Example:
- I will make some new friends.
- I will have a beach named after me.
- I will be my own boss.
- I will save the whales.
- I will have a new car.
- I will have a Xena Warrior Princess doll.
- My houseplants will live long and be green.
…and so on.
When you are finished, place your list in an envelope, seal it, write the date on it, and put it in a sacred place in your home. Or you could just bless it and stick it in a drawer. You have just asked for what you want. This is how you plant seeds. After 1 year has passed, take out your list, and see which of these seeds have taken root in your life.
The Lunar Eclipse meditation:
You can do this anytime between the Lunar Eclipse and the next New Moon. Same as the Solar Eclipse list, except this is a little harder. This time, think of the things in your life you would like to bring to a close, finish, or end. That contract you want to get signed, that job you want to finish. That guilty feeling. That unhealthy relationship. That nasty smoking habit.
Take some time to sit in a quiet space and breathe. Visualize the inner workings of that habit, the issue, the situation, as people. Give them names and faces! My addicted smoker and my inner doctor. My gentle self and my angry self. Visualize them each holding one end of a rope, like a tug of war. They can see each other now, how can they better understand one another? How can they work together to achieve balance? Picture each one gently dropping their end of the rope.
You have just asked for assistance from the universe to clear out old energies and make room for the things you want to bring in. There is great power in this request.

I love your website. It's really helping me to learn Astrology. The animated illustration on this page is really helpful, but I wish the animation were a little slower so I could focus on each stage.
Thank you!
2 · Molly · 24 May 2005
I know what you mean, Elizabeth. It moves too fast, and it's not the best depiction of the Earth-Sun-Moon relationship either.. does anyone out there know of a better one? Just comment here or send me an e-mail.Molly

Just found your site on Google.com .......delighted! Have 5 retrograde planets at birth.....told max is 7 on ones Natal chart..........have had professional astrology done on several ocassions, very few absolutes or (nails on the head) have been hit......cannot overcome inner anxiousness long enough to follow through with accomplishments with the exception of health & Physical disciplines which I've a handle on after yrs. of wildlife!!!!! Knowing, ultimately always it's up to each individual to achieve, I still feel there's a bit of a magical key hidden in my Natal chart which I've yet to understand in order to propel forward and practice cosistency in my artistic endeavors.........very mobile lifestyle.......what do you recommend? Thanx for listening.........Maggs4 · Molly · 20 September 2005
Hey Maggs-- Congrats on getting healthy! It's very hard to speculate on something like this without looking at your chart. It could be a chemical imbalance or just waaaay too overtaxed nerves. (Do you drink a lot of coffee?) Maybe you need some work with a healer to identify and work with the fear that's behind the anxiety. I'm just speculating here, an off-duty astrologer without a chart to look at. If you want to book a session I'll be glad to let you know what I see in there.
Blessings and best of luck.

I am hoping you can shed some light on (pun intended) as to what happens when your progressed full moon conjuncts north node (total lunar eclipse) this is occurring in my life tomorrow.
Kind regards,
Pamela
12 · Molly · 13 March 2007
Pamela,
Progressions happen slowly, over time. So a progressed aspect that’s exact tomorrow has actually been going on for a few weeks to a month. What’s going to happen? I don’t know. What has been happening? That’s your answer.

Hi, Molly, thanks for the above-info. What is the general impact on a native’s life if born at the time of a total lunar eclipse? could it be karmic? is this incarnation designed to conclude some unfinished business from past lives? or
would it put a cloud on the native’s emotions for the present incarnation?
14 · Molly · 2 January 2008
D.P., if you were born at a Lunar Eclipse, then the Sun and Moon are both conjunct the Nodes. So there is a karmic pattern there, but I don’t have a one-size-fits-all interpretation for you. But I think the idea of having unfinished karmic business to take care of is a good place to start. The signs of the Sun and Moon, and other aspects will help you fill in the details of the story.

My husband and I were married just a tad before a total lunar eclipse (October 27, 2004.) We had been discussing getting married but had no date set, and on a whim decided to do it on a trip which was planned for a few days away, and it just so happened to be this night. He is a Virgo with Scorpio rising and Taurus moon. I am Pisces w/ Leo rising and Capricorn Moon. We had known each other just under six months! We have an astrologer friend who, as the first one to hear our news, couldn’t tell us on the spot what this sign meant to us. Obviously, our sun sign are opposite, so my simplistic interpretation is that we balance each other perfectly well and should see this as our biggest strength, not our worst fault. What is your thought?
16 · viv · 31 March 2008
my dad’s south node is exactly conjunct my pre eclipse pre birth on 21 degrees pisces . I suspect a karmic connection there are difficulties in creating harmony yet a let of psychic awareness what do you think? Viv

What does it mean if you were born on a solar eclipse. I’m a Saggitatarius 11/23/46 with the majority of my signs in Scorpio and Saggitarius and the rest in Leo, Gemini and Libra.

I have my natal moon at 21 degrees leo. This is where the eclipse is taking place. i was wondering if this is going to affect me more so. And what if say my 21 degree moon is opposite of my guy’s 21 degrees Aquarius sun? I’m a little nervous…. any suggestions?
25 · Jacques · 1 July 2009
Molly,
I have a stellium Venus 4, Mars 6, Sun 10, Mercury 20, saturn 29, all in Capricorn, with a wide conjunction to Jupiter at 10 Aquarius. The solar Eclipse of July 22 occurs at 29 Cancer, since my Saturn is directly opposite and my Stellium pretty much all gets hit, what can I expect ? 2nd house stellium, 28 Scorpio rising.
Many thanks…
26 · Molly · 3 July 2009
Hi Jacques, I use very tight orbs for Eclipses, so I would only pay attention to the opposition to Saturn and the trine to your Ascendant. Something involving the houses that Saturn rules, and also the house with natal Mars. Sounds like hard work that is ultimately well worth it.

Dear Molly, Thank you for your wonderful “in-site”—I just stumbled upon it while searching for info on having surgery during an eclipse—a niggling memory of something heard long ago about a tabooed connection. I’m scheduled for 7/21 at 8 a.m. PDT. I’m a Scorpio/Cancer rising/Taurus moon. Is there some negative juju around eclipse date surgeries, that you know of? Thank you so much!
28 · Molly · 5 July 2009
Hi Chrissy – I tried to e-mail you but my e-mail bounced back.
I will be happy to help you with this, but I cannot work from the info you gave me. I need to see the chart. Please get back to me with your answers to the questions here: www.north-node.com/surgery

My friends are newly weds and both are virgos, expecting their first baby to be born on the Aug 5th, full moon lunar eclipse in Aquarius. So this baby will have a sun-moon opposition but I’m wondering if there is any trend seen for a lunar eclipse baby. Its very interesting! Thanks

Hi, I have tried to find the significance of a solar eclipse in a native chart, but with no success. Perhaps you will not know either, but I always felt that it must be significant of something. 4 hours after I was born the 31th August 1970 there was a total solar eclipse in my 11th house, where I also have the sun, moon, mars and ketu according to vedic astrology. Moon mars and Ketu are almost conjunct, while the sun is 10 degrees away from them. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts about this.
36 · Christine · 14 January 2010
Molly, I have a friend who is having an office-warming party tomorrow evening, Jan 15th – the day of the Solar Eclipse. Is it an inauspicious time to be doing that – inaugurating a new space during an eclipse? I always thought it was best to lay low on those days – not travel if you don’t have to, etc. It is a good time to launch this or not?
Thank you!
37 · Molly · 15 January 2010
It’s a fine day for a party. New Moon, a new beginning.

Hi! I am getting married next year and have picked out a date, September 10, 2011. When I told this to my mom, she said to check out the lunar phase, consult about it. I just checked via www.lunaf.com, and the lunar phase on this date is Waxing Gibbous under the sign of Aquarius. Is this a good date to get married? Thank you so much.

Francesca, here are my considerations for choosing a wedding date.

Hey Molly, I had an eclipse on my moon 25deg Aquarius about 18 months ago, but on the 11th July this year I have an eclipse within three degrees of my Sun sign 22 deg in my 11th house. I know how devastating eclipses can be but I hope this will be a beneficial surprise. What could I be in for? Birthdate 15/7/57 9-45am Hamilton NZ. Any light would be great
Thanks Shane

Hey Molly,
First, nice work explaining all of this. I think I’m starting to get it. I’ve always been interested in the subject but have not really had the impulse to explore it more until now.
I was wondering what effect (if any) a lunar eclipse might have on a leo. I was born on August 17,1989 which happens to have been a lunar eclipse and was wondering what that said about me.
Thanks,
Kyle

45 · Angi · 30 June 2010
Stumbled across your site and the “100 things you want” list seems super cool! Since we have a solar eclipse coming up, I was wondering when do I start making my list? Do I wait till July 12 and do it before the the next full moon which is July 26th?
Thanks!
46 · Erica · 30 June 2010
Hey Molly, do we really need to write 100 things down? Because I find this a bit too much. Can’t we make it to a number of things that we are comfortable at, such as 30 for example? I know for myself, there is no way that I could come up with 100 things to achieve. The way i see it, whither it is 100 or 25. The outcome will still come out the same, no matter what you do. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you, Molly.
47 · Molly · 30 June 2010
Angi: the eclipse is at 3:40 pm eastern time on July 11. Start anytime after that.
Erica, the point of requiring 100 things is that it is hard. It makes you really think about what you want. Going through that thought process at the time of the eclipse CAN influence the outcome. It’s a worthwhile exercise.
48 · Sandy · 1 July 2010
Hi Molly, great site! I was curious – is it better to phrase your Solar Eclipse “wants” in present tense or future – i.e. “I now have the raise I wanted” v.s. “ I will get a raise”? Thanks.
49 · meredith · 4 July 2010
Hi Molly,
I love your site and visit regularly.my questions, the solar eclipse on July 11 is in my ninth house square natal merc,
sextile natal venus, trine natal saturn sextile natal uranus and natal pluto conjunct natal true node, and trine natal chiron. It also is conjunct my MC (2 degrees leo in tenth house) What/where will the intensity of the solar eclipse will be felt? Also as Sag is the natural ruler of the ninth and jupiter is its ruler, will transiting jupiter (or the house it is in- the fifth) be affected here?
Many thanks
Meredith

Hi Molly,
Your website is superb….
I am learning so much!
This eclipse is quite important im sure, is it possible for you to tell me how it will affect me? I could give you my chart….
Or if not, how can I find out myself.
I dont have any planets in Cancer but the house of cancer is the 4th house right? If so, I have no planets there…. So, what else to look for?
I am a libra if that means anything regarding this Solar Eclipse.
Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Molly.
My birthday is July 20th 1987 and i understand that there is a solar eclipse happening today ? i need a little more help understanding this. i’ve never looked into these things before and ever since i’ve been getting unusually moody these past weeks (maybe a month or two), up and down, back and forth with myself, cryng ? Something suddenly got me interested in this. I found out that my moon sign is Gemini and people are saying its just a “mood” thing but this is actually a unique feeling i have here. My rising sign is also Libra and something online told me i hit the jackpot. Anyways,
Please help ? What effects are supposed to be taking place ? Would it have anything to do with the eclipse ? Do i need a birth chart to understand or something ?
btw; i am definitely doing the 100 list thing. Can’t wiat.
52 · Alissa · 11 July 2010
I’m very confused about the eclipse and assignment. Do I write the list of 100 things I want to let go of? Isn’t the lunar eclipse in Dec of 2010? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as I love the site and intentions.
53 · Angi · 11 July 2010
Starting my list in an hour! I’ve got the wheels turning…and Alissa, I’m pretty sure its a list of things you WANT.. like for instant, I want a 4.0GPA for my fall and spring semesters, so I will put down I WILL rather than I want. It’s basically things you want to happen, but rather than wanting them, you will “will them”
hopes this helps! and good luck everyone who are working on their lists soon! hope you all achieve what you desire!

56 · KC · 13 July 2010
Hi Molly,
I am from Singapore and the solar eclipse on 11 Jul 2010(actually 3.45 am 12 Jul 2010) falls on my 50th birthday (born in 1960). So, it actually conjunct my natal Sun in my 5th House. What significance would this be bringing from the perspective of western astrology?

My partner and I are planning to get married on either 03/12/11 or 10/12/11. Can you tell me which day would be best please? I have checked one website and believe the 03/12/11 is between a waning and a full moon which stated this is a good day to get married. Thanks, Heather. x
