What the Rising Sign means
The Ascendant is another name for the cusp of the first house. It marks the part of the Zodiac that is rising, or directly on the Eastern horizon, at the time of your birth. That’s why the sign of the Ascendant it is also called the rising sign.
The sign of the Ascendant describes:
- your “style”
- the way you get things done
- your mannerisms
- your appearance
- the side of you that you put forth when you are trying to make a good impression
It is at least as important as the Sun in your chart.
How can I find my ascendant?
To find your ascendant, you will need to have your chart.
Note: The rising sign (the sign of the ascendant) changes every 2 hours on average. So you’ll need to know your birth time to accurately determine your ascendant.
Notice that the chart is visually divided into 12 pieces. Many beginners think that each of those pieces represents a sign of the Zodiac. That’s not the case. They represent the houses.
If you move your finger counter-clockwise around the “pie pieces” of the chart, your finger will traverse each of the 12 houses in order. Each of the “spokes” of the wheel marks the entrance to each house. That line is called the cusp of the house.
The ascendant is the first house cusp. The first house represents the physical appearance, mannerisms, and self which one projects outward. It is one of the strongest and most important houses in the chart. The house cusp is the doorway to a house. The sign on the house cusp describes the affairs of that house. So the sign of the ascendant describes your appearance, outward personality, and how you get things done.
The sign of the ascendant is also known as the rising sign.
Example: Elvis Presley’s chart
What is Elvis’ rising sign? Remember, trace your finger counter-clockwise around the chart. The line you cross before entering the first house is the Ascendant.

Sagittarius is the rising sign in Elvis’ chart.
The Ascendant, as mentioned before, can tell us about a person’s style: his mannerisms, appearance, and the way he approaches the world.
Sagittarius is known for being ethical, philosophical, lots of fun, and happy-go-lucky. On the flip side, Sagittarius is excessive and can overdo things, exaggerate, be overly optimistic, and bite off more than he can chew. Can you find examples of this in the life of Elvis? Oh, yes.
Difference between the rising sign and the Sun sign
The Sun sign describes your substance. The rising sign describes your style. Our example, Elvis, is an example of a person whose Sun sign and Ascendant have very different characteristics. He was born with Sun in Capricorn.
- The sign
Capricorn is serious, demanding, status-conscious, ambitious. - The sign
Sagittarius is optimistic, philosophical, excessive.
These two sound contradictory, but are they really? People are complex, and have many facets. These two signs describe two different sides of Elvis.
Elvis’ motivation (Sun) was status, ambition, career. He was a dutiful and hard worker, in his later years troubled and depressed (Capricorn) as he let himself go. His approach to the world (Ascendant) was through excess, hyperbole, exaggeration, being bigger than life (Sagittarius). He shocked 1950s America by singing “black music,” bridging cultures (Sagittarius) and opening the door for white people to accept, appreciate, and purchase music by black artists.
What if we reverse the two? Let’s find a well-known person with Sun in Sagittarius and Capricorn ascending.
A well-known owner of this configuration is Jane Fonda, the famous actress and anti-war activist. With her Capricorn ascendant, her style is serious and ambitious (Capricorn). The Sun represents her substance, what motivates her— idealism, political activism, and belief in doing what’s right (Sagittarius).
Jane Fonda:

What sign is your Ascendant?
Note!
Since the house cusps are based on the Earth’s rotation, the ascending sign changes, on average, every 2 hours (12 signs in 24 hours). If your birth time is not correct, the ascendant may be incorrect in your chart.
Can you find it in your chart? Is it the same as, or similar in nature to your Sun sign, or is it different? How do you experience in your life the interplay of these two signs in your chart?

Dear Molly:How does an Ascendent that is placed in the opposite sign affects you? I'm a virgo with a Piscis ascendent. Does it mean my personality is balanced or out of balance??
Thank you!!
Sonia
4 · Molly · 14 March 2006
Hi Sonia.. opposing signs does not mean you are out of balance, although that is a possibility.. it means you need to find the balance, find the strengths in both signs to shore up the weaknesses. For example, Virgo obsesses over details, and Pisces can let go and let creativity come in. Pisces’ idealism can get them into unhealthy relationships, and Virgo has the discrimination to know who’s worth having in your life and who isn’t. Read as much as you can on both signs, with the understanding that you are both.

HI there…nice website…and definitely helps to understand the ascendent sign. I am Gemini with Pisces rising…I sometimes feel a little “nuts”. In your opinion, with this combination…can you see where I might feel that way?
6 · Molly · 31 March 2006
Hi Kellie—
Well I don’t know the rest of your chart, which would tell me the whole story. But Pisces and Gemini are by nature fairly ungrounded signs. So when you’re feeling spacey and disconnected from reality, you can try going outside and sitting with a tree or taking a few deep breaths to get centered.

Thanks for answering my question…thank goodness I have Taurus in Mercury to help ground my mind. :-) I have spent a good bit of time here today and REALLY like your entire site. I want to learn about astrology. I have always had insterest but now REALLY feel that interest increasing.

Hi Molly. My sun sign is virgo and i’ve found out that my ascendant sign is scorpio. What does that tell you about me? (personality, appearance etc.)
10 · Milan · 3 May 2006
Hi Molly! I can’t seem to find anywhere how my ascendant affects my sun sign, or vise-versa. My sun sign is Taurus, and my ascendant is Pisces. What can you tell me about me, considering both?
11 · Molly Cliborne · 5 May 2006
Listen up, y'all.. I wrote this tutorial to help you learn astrology. If you want me to interpret your chart for you, click "consultations" above and book a session with me. I'm not going to spend my valuable time spoon feeding your signs to you. Because it's this simple:
The Sun is your basic character. The Moon describes how you are wired emotionally, what you need for security. And the ascendant describes the way in which you approach the world, your personality, the first impression you make.
I have a whole page for each sign.. your personality is a patchwork quilt made up of all three. Sun AND Moon AND Ascendant. Go read about those signs, and you have your answer.
12 · Hannah Slattery-Quintanilla · 11 May 2006
Molly,
It’s funny how overzealous people get wanting interpretations. I guess it’s human nature. hehee. I know doing tarot readings I had people lining up long after I said “I can’t do any more!” I guess it shows how desperate for answers we can all get from time to time, but you’re right…the most satisfying experience is to learn things on your own, or find your way. I have to remind myself of that all the time!

13 · Tav Spence · 30 May 2006
Dear Molly,
I have read a little bit by Alan Leo concerning the importance of the planet that is rising on a natal chart (not really to do with the rising sign).
He says that if a planet is in the 1st or 12th house, or if both the one that is closer (but either just above or just below the horizon), it reveals something about the circumstances in which the individual will find advantageous in their personal quest for the ideal life. I suppose for me it’s out of Neptune and the Sun as far as bodies go; however my North Node is ever so nearer. So here it is, the question; could you please write a few lines on what this aspect means for me? My details are:D.O.B 14/01/1974, 0445 AEDST, Sydney, Australia. I am very interested in Astrology as well as other areas of mysticism and occult science. Thankyou very much for any and all help you are able to give.
Sincerely,

Hi Molly,
I have been searching my astrology books for info in determining how the asendant or rising sign is calculated. What determines when a sign is rising? Does it change to a different time each day; does the Earth’s rotation around the Sun change the time?
Thank you,
María
16 · Molly · 25 June 2006
Hi Maria--
If you want to do it by hand, the most accurate way is by getting an Ephemeris, so you can calculate local sidereal time for the birth. Then you use a Table of Houses to calculate the ascendant.
Unfortunately, it looks like the 20th century ephemeris is out of print & expensive. You might be able to find a cheap copy on bookfinder.com. You can also download individual years at astro.com.
Chris Mitchell has an excellent explanation of how it's done here.

Hello, I’m a little confused on my ascendant because a few websites say that it is Virgo and others calculate it as Libra, birthdate: Dec. 22, 85 time=12:34 or 00:34 location=82w10, 33n25 or Fort gordon, ga
Which is my ascendant and how does that counteract with my sun sign?
26 · Molly · 29 March 2007
Hi Steph—
Go with the ascendant you get at astro.com. They have a complete atlas of time changes all over the world. Other sites are missing this. The greatest margin for error when calculating a chart is in determining the correct time zone. So it’s always best to use a program that does it for you automatically.
I get Libra.

Hi Allison— A book can give you an estimate, but it’s only an estimate. It may or may not turn out to be right. Most online chart calculators are not reliable. Run your chart on astro.com to get an accurate calculation and find your true ascendant.
I get 11 degrees Leo.

What if you don’t feel that you fit your rising? I keep double checking with my mother regarding my birth time, even though it is plain as day on my certificate. It feels off. Who verifies the astrology/math and scientific aspects of astrology are currently valid? It’s been perplexing me lately….when I read the rising sign and personal chart info on astro.com or other sites for the sign before ‘my rising sign’ it fits better than ‘mine’ does…just a feeling….
does the science of astrology change? what are the variables?
32 · Molly · 5 November 2007
Gem,
Either your birth time was recorded wrong, or you lack understanding of your rising sign and other factors that may be at play. The math part of astrology does not change. There’s no doubt that sign was rising in that place at that time.

I don’t need any help determining any chart placements. (Just thought I’d get that out up front LOL).
What I would like to know is if you have any recommendations for either websites or books on:
Minor Aspects as they pertain to Nodes and/or Arabic Parts? I love what you’ve got here, and I’m still nosing my way through the site, but I’m not finding much other than keywords so far in a Google search, and I’m hesitant to plonk down $15-$30 to order a book on line without a recommendation or review of some kind. Preferably from someone who seems to have all their stuff in a pile.
Thanks!

45 · Molly · 26 June 2008
Ozrichelle, your ascendant may be wrong if there is some doubt that your birth time is correct. If you know it’s accurate, then you just need to learn more about astrology and about your chart. Sometimes it just takes a few years for the meaning of it to emerge and make sense to you.

Hi Molly
Great explanation of sadge rising via Elvis.I always learn so much here and plan to learn more about astrology.I do understand aspects of my rising. What I am curious about is this: When a transiting planet like Pluto for example squares your rising are you affected from within or without?
Will you attract obstacles that come to you from the outside or could it be an inner conflict or both.
47 · joyce · 2 July 2008
Hey Molly,
In regard to George’s question, the “butterfly holding the key” might be a very stylized version of the symbol for Scorpio, but “Code 83” has got me.
Speaking of scorpio and mysterious stylized symbols, check out Scorpion comic Kathy Griffin’s website. There is a section of it with a subtle shadow of her initials that resembles the scorpio symbol. as an astrologer and a graphic artist you may find it interesting.

Careful sixth moon… just because you are something and you have Libra rising, does not mean all Libra risings have the same trait. And just because you like what one author said about Libra rising, does not make it true in all cases, or even good astrology.
50 · Dennis · 18 August 2008
Hey. I just wanted to menchin one thing. For those who are looking at their ascendant, and wondering why it dose not sound right, remember that if there are any planets in the first house, that will have an impact. For example, I knew this person, and I could sware that he had an Aries ascendant. The way he acted with all his energy, and his aparent need to be number one and so on. Once I got his full chart, I saw that he was a Virgo ascendant, but he had Mars in the first house. Astrology is very complex, and you have to look deep. I have many of those stories in my astrlogical travels. Even in my own chart, this was the case. At one time I was trying to figure out why I had alll this subconcus agression going on, and feelings of unreleased anger. I looked and looked, until I realized that I had a Mars in the 12 house. I love this stuff. Do your own research, and use your own charts as an example.
51 · Molly · 18 August 2008
Planets in angular houses definitely have an impact, Dennis. That’s the first thing I teach people to look for when they’re learning to read charts. Before signs, even.

I have noticed something very interesting. It seems that a person with a particular sign as an ascendant has problems with people with that sun sign. Im really happy to have found your website!
I have a question though. I have tried to look this up on numerous pages but not many people have answered it or know what it is…
I know what a “Venus Conjunct the Ascendant” is.
But what is a “Venus Opposition Ascendant”
someone said in a blog that “Venus opposition Ascendant IS Venus conjunct the DEscendant.”
what does that mean?
Sun = Taurus
Ascendant = Sagittarius
Descendant = Gemini
If venus is conjunct the descendant, how does a person behave or the attributes if it is in Gemini ?
Please write back soon !
you can email me too :)

62 · Molly · 24 March 2009
Hi Phoenix— the ascendant and descendant form a straight line across the chart. The ascendant is the eastern horizon, and the descendant is the western horizon. They are always directly opposite one another. Therefore conjunct the desc. is the same as opposite the asc.
For help interpreting, see my page on the angles.

Molly! Your explanation was perfect!
I really enjoy your site.
I have been captivated with astrology from an unusually young age. I am 19, and recently I have been feeling that the sooner I channel my life purpose, the better. Though I have always been aware of being highly intuitive, in the past few months I have felt downright psychic. Trust me, I understand that you could not possibly respond to everyone. I just really hope you can find the time to respond to this.
Since mid-dec 2008 I have been doing various types of meditation and delving into all things spiritual.
At this point I do not know exactly what steps to take in life, and why I have become so obsessed with finding my purpose all of a sudden. Everyday I have mini-epiphanies of a prophetic nature concerning myself and the whole world.
I probably sound crazy. That said, it is becoming a constant challenge to relate to my friends because I think I am psychic and that I have some sort of large-scale life purpose. The last few months this has been my struggle.
Am I alienating myself unnecessarily by my inability and/or refusal to focus on the day-to-day? Do I have some large, profound life purpose that will change the world? Should I continue my spiritual journey and challenge myself to find new friends who understand my mind-set better?
I was born January 25th, 1990 in Calgary Alberta at 5:30 AM
Sun: Aquarius
Moon: Capricorn
Rising: Sagittarius
If you could PLEASE even give me the tiniest bit of insight onto where I am and what I should do/ if I am crazy, I would be very grateful.
Thank you!

Hi Ash— I ran your chart, it’s very intersting. You have 6 planets in Capricorn. And Jupiter in Cancer. With Pluto now in Capricorn, the next 15 years are going to be very interesting indeed. You will be seeking to understand yourself at a deeper level, looking for the deeper meanings in your life, and undergoing major changes. This is just the beginning of it. I suspect the feeling will become more normal to you as you grow and change over the years. Good luck.

Hello, I was born at 6:47 am on 09/19/1967 in Corpus Christi Texas. I was told that both my rising and sun sign are in Virgo. Is this why i am often disheartened with my personal life, and want to take care of everybody?

Thank you! I hope to turn “interesting” into a postive thing…
:) :)
Thanks so much Again!

01/25/1962 Los Angeles, CA 4:20 am. I got a book, then another, etc. I’ve got a BA in Counseling and more recently a Teacher’s License. I’ve finally settled on teaching as a career with emphasis on working with kids needing counseling from their teacher as well. Please tell me I’ll finally have found a career where the department won’t get axed or the company will suddenly fold up. Is it my career choices? or just my life path? It seems with so many planets in the second house things shouldn’t be so hard financially! My sympathies go out to Ash…. lol It must be an Aquarian thing.

Hmmm, interesting.
You are correct about the 1st house sign being how we project ourselves to the outside world. That is also how I see it.
For me,I also find the planet ruling the ascendant insightful in gaining further knowledege about the sign on the 1st house cusp.
I know that it is a controversial view to have; given the fact that currently astrologers are disagreeing on whether to use the traditional planetary rulers/ the current ones when trying to gain insight on natal interpretation:Not to mention the Pluto planet/dwarf question that still remains unresolved.
With all this in mind however, I see a lot of similarities with the interpretations of the Venus planet and my rising sign.
Perhaps the visitors of your sight can read on the ruling planet in order to gain further insight about their ascendant?

Very nice looking site btw Molly (-:
Me:
Virgo Ascending.
Aries Sun.
Leo Moon.
I watch my diet & don’t eat meat or fish. I love eating healthy but I have a weakness for potatoes, chips & bread. I love all animals – from the tiniest critter to the largest ever. I also love sport except golf & cricket (zzzzzz). Prefer to play it & I like it as intense as possible then I am a complete zombie. I am either super neat or the opposite but I am always organised (in my mind!) I love creating things with my hands especially silly cartoons of my animals. I don’t like the limelight.
Well, that’s enough about me then (-:

I have Aries Moon, Taurus Sun, and I did the rising sign calculations myself and got Virgo but everything else says I’m leo. Can someone tell me the traits of both so I can see the most fitting one? Thanks.

St. A – enter your data on astro.com. That will give you the correct ascendant. Hand calculations are unreliable, there is a lot of room for error.

Hi molly just to be sure could you calculate my birth chart for me and tell me what my rising sign and moon sign is i was born on june 26 1986 at 10:18am honolulu, hawaii thank you
80 · Stina · 6 April 2010
Hi Molly,
I have sun in aquarius, ascendant in capricorn and moon in cancer. I also have 4 planets in capricorn and my north node in capricorn. I am quite obviously an aquarius personality and look even like a very typical aquarian… but the capricorn side of me is still quite strong! It pulls me down to earth alot probably, which is a good thing :) It is so cool to see many people on here interested in astrology!
81 · kat · 6 April 2010
Hi Molly,
this is kat i also forgot to mention that i was born on the cusp of gemini/cancer
82 · Kate · 13 April 2010
Hi Molly.
My Sun is in Leo, Moon in Leo and my Ascendant is Sagittarius (yay double Leo haha).
I was surprised to find that my ascendent is what it is. I used a different calculator to find my ascendant a few years back which incorporated location, hour of birth, time zones etc but the result was Pisces! I do not remember if it asked for the number of minutes so that might be where it was wrong…
I had come onto this site yesterday after trying to find out whether being induced to mother’s health, and as a result being born as a Leo rather than a Virgo, would influence the my Leo traits. Now after getting my chart I am very interested in understanding what all these Astrology things mean. I am learning a lot off this site to aid me in my curiosity and new fascination.
So THANKYOU!!! :)

Is it me or does it seem like everyone was born in the morning? Anyways, I bet you don’t see a chart as interesting as mine every day 2/11/94 5:25 p.m. Boston.
87 · Julie · 16 July 2010
Hi Molly. I have been looking into astrology for years, just for fun, bugging my friends (and sometimes strangers) for their charts and comparing what I read with what I see. I’ve noticed something that I’ve yet to see reflected in any “cookbook” descriptions of rising signs… or in any discussion on rising signs at all, actually. In my observations, a rising capricorn, say, seems to express capricorn differently than a sun sign capricorn (or a moon sign capricorn, which seems to be different also). In specific, the outward expression of someone, what is supposed to fall into the purview of the rising sign, seems to be a combination of BOTH the rising and descending signs, that polarity, in a way that I haven’t noticed with sun or moon signs. For instance, I know quite a few people with pisces rising and down to the last one, no matter how piscean they appear at first glance, they also have something strongly “virgoan” in that first look, like an incredibly organized music collection, or the interest in and capability to analyze a topic of conversation to its smallest component parts, or a strong drive to use one’s capabilities efficiently, for a concrete purpose, or something else strikingly virgoan. I’ve seen this with other rising signs, too. It seems to be a case where the general presentation falls clearly into the characteristics associated with the rising sign, but one or two things which are “out of character” will clearly pop out and upon closer inspection, are characteristics that are usually associated with the opposite sign. Do you have any experience with this?
88 · Melissa · 16 July 2010
Hello, I am a Virgo with an Aquarius Ascendant.
89 · Molly · 17 July 2010
Julie – yes, that is so true. Every sign contains a shadow, a reflection of its opposite. It’s true for the Ascendant and other points as well. If you read Liz Greene’s Astrology for Lovers, she talks about this idea quite a bit.
