Dune cover 1967

He recalled another thing the old woman had said about a world being the sum of many things— the people, the dirt, the growing things, the moons, the tides, the suns— the unknown sum called nature, a vague summation without any sense of the now. And he wondered: What is the now?
Frank Herbert, Dune

I am 50 pages into Dune, and I must say I love this book. It has re-kindled the brief but fulfilling affair I had with sci-fi in college. It’s beautifully written and wonderfully philosophical. I am reading slowly and carefully, absorbing the lay of the land and savoring the beauty and strangeness and deliciousness of getting to know this strange world, this wonderful writing. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Anyway, you’re here for June, not Dune. Let’s talk about June.

Mercury retrograde

Mercury is retrograde until June 19. Don’t think of this as a flashing red light, instructing you to crawl into your hole and do nothing. Think of it as a flashing yellow light. Slow down. Take your time with things. Mercury is the planet of communications, transportation, thinking and ideas, as well as the day-to-day minutiae of our lives. When retrograde— moving contrary to its usual direction— these things in our lives tend to move against the grain as well. Traffic backs up; stuff happens that messes up our schedules; our technical gadgets malfunction; we make false assumptions or misunderstand one another. So be flexible. Many folks will tell you not to sign any contracts of any sort during Mercury retrograde. That’s kind of silly. But you do need to be cautious, read the fine print, and write any contingencies into the contract before signing. And you may want to put off any major equipment or software upgrades if possible.

This “backtracking” energy has its benefits too. Use Mercury retrograde to revise a writing project or artistic piece that you started in the past. Or review your files at work. Revisit plans for your house, your garden, whatever. Or look up old friends. This is a great time for catching up.

Another interesting backtrack this month is Pluto moving back into Sagittarius. Earlier this year, Pluto entered Capricorn for the first time in almost 250 years. This coincided with the banking crisis, rising crude oil and gasoline prices, and other manifestations of folks leaving behind the Pluto in Sagittarius philosophy of “endless growth” that has been in force the last 15 years, and entering a new 15 year period that will see us coming to terms with the reality of living on a planet with limited resources. But Pluto is going to dip back into the tail end of Sag for a few months, from June 13 to November 27. I don’t know what this means exactly, but the signs look to me to be a kind of “finishing up” happening. Like moving out of your apartment and having to return later, to clean up.

This looks like a pretty good week, with a good series of sextiles between the Sun, Venus, and Mercury in Gemini, and Mars in Leo. Venus governs finances and connections. Mars is our actions and general level of energy. So things are looking pretty cruisy. Even though retrograde Mercury shuffles a few jokers into the deck, these easygoing aspects suggest a friendly and cooperative mood around the home and office. It may not be the best time to initiate a new project, especially one requiring big money, but it will probably work well for going back and reorganizing, reviewing the budget, shopping around for better deals, fixing or enhancing something you already have going.

The New Moon on Tuesday afternoon clears the decks and kicks off a new cycle. The New Moon is a great time to let go of an old habit and refocus your awareness on where you want to be in the future. I successfully quit smoking on the New Moon— twice! (yeah, I know. I was stupid and started up again the first time, after a year of not smoking.) Gemini highlights listening skills, writing, speech, language, transportation, messages, and social graces. Be mindful of the messages you are sending out, verbally and nonverbally too. Listen, listen, listen. Indulge your curiosity and stay in the moment.

June 10-14

Tuesday-Thursday, Venus and the Sun in restless Gemini will both form a square (quack) to Uranus in touchy, sensitive Pisces. Uranus squares are jumpy, unpredictable, and full of surprises. Uranus wants to experiment, be free, and do it “my way.” There’s a restless and rebellious mood that could precipitate emotional thunderstorms or problems with the car, computer, or other electrical gadgets.

Save your most important business for Friday and Saturday, when the storm passes and the Sun and Venus line up in a kiss with compassionate and creative Neptune. The gates to another world are open.

June 15-21

Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads reading this. You have my total respect for doing one of the most important jobs in the world. Hats off to you who hang in there and do your job, even when it’s tough. Thanks for being there.

Monday and Tuesday, easy does it. The Moon is in lighthearted, free-spirited Sagittarius, but it’s waxing to full, which can still bring emotions to the surface. And Venus is nearing opposition to Pluto. Venus represents connections and relationships; Pluto can heal or destroy. An opposition pairs them together. Good or bad? Depends on how you handle it. It could go either way. Seek common ground, listen to others’ viewpoints and perspective. Don’t be a drama queen. Be open to compromise, but don’t force it. The Full Moon on Wednesday afternoon brings high tide— a time of fruition and emotional intensity. It’s a good time to meditate to process and integrate this highly creative energy. Let it open and focus your awareness. That’s much better than getting drawn into the high drama and reactivity that tends to percolate during full Moon times.

Thursday and Friday, the Sun repeats the opposition to Pluto. This can bring up issues of ego, inflexibility, and (as both are in the ending degrees of their signs) an indication of something that you need to finish up and let go of, once and for all. Aspects to Pluto can be intense and uncomfortable, but there is always the potential for healing or transforming a situation. Venus in a kiss to stable and constructive Saturn on Friday helps a lot— reach out and build a bridge. Mars opposite spaced-out Neptune on Friday and Saturday may cloud some issues. Take care of what you can. If you only have a rough sketch for the rest, that’s okay. Next week will be great for filling in the details.

Significant shifts. Mercury retrograde ended on Thursday evening. Venus and the Sun moved from logical Gemini to intuitive Cancer on Wednesday morning and Friday evening, respectively. Happy Solstice, and blessed be.

June 22-30

This week is smooth sailing as far as planetary aspects go. The Sun will form a sextile to solid and practical Saturn, making Monday and Tuesday great days to lay your cards on the table, discuss your ideas with the boss or authorities, and ask for the help you need.

Uranus is stationary this week, turning retrograde on June 26. Uranus retrograde is not a big deal— he’s retrograde half the time. But when a planet is stationary, its energy tends to be very powerful, like a Sharpie™ pen held in one place for a long time. Uranus’ energy is sudden, unpredictable, surprising and liberating— a wake-up call. Unexpected responses and conflict, as well as a liberating epiphany or unexpected benefit from “out of the blue” may issue from this inky blob of Uranian energy.

Sunday and Monday, a powerful interplanetary kiss appears— Mars trine Pluto. This kiss pairs high energy and action with power and healing. Trines remove friction and make it possible to overcome great obstacles. But they do not compel you to do anything. You have to provide the motivation, leadership ability and creativity to bring your dream to life. It’s the dark of the Moon, a time to work on the inner planes to visualize a better future. You can start work on the New Moon, July 2. See you then…
