In astrology, every planet and object in the Solar system— the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and even asteroids— relates to some aspect of our lives. This month, let’s take a closer look at Venus. Why Venus? She is the goddess of beauty, love, attraction. Her position in your natal chart indicates sources of enjoyment in your life and the kind of relationships that really work for you (and those that don’t).
What’s your Venus sign?
Your Venus sign might be different than your Sun sign. The Sun travels through the 12 signs at a more or less constant pattern. The Sun always enters Aries at the beginning of Spring. Venus circles around the Sun, and can be as many as two signs away. Sometimes she is ahead of the Sun in the Zodiac. In February 2005, Venus is in Aquarius, the same sign as the Sun. Other times Venus appears up to 2 signs behind the Sun. Therefore, in your birth chart, Venus may or may not be in the same sign as your Sun! This is good information— if I’m an Aries and my Venus sign is Taurus, I need excitement, speed and stimulation in life (Aries), but I enjoy gardening and want my relationships & love life to be stable, settled, slow and sensual (Taurus).
Finding out your Venus sign is easy if you have a computer. Just visit the Swiss site Astrodienst (www.astro.com), to calculate your chart online for free, or look it up in their handy Venus sign ephemeris.

The symbol for Venus in your birth chart is a circle with a cross underneath. It’s the ancient symbol of the Goddess and the modern symbol for the ladies’ room. How times have changed!

If you have Venus in Aries, my, Mon Cherie— you are like the lovable cartoon skunk Pepe LePew (in character, not necessarily in scent!). You know what you want in a relationship, and you feel best when you don’t let your fears stop you from going after it. To try and fail is much better than to isolate yourself from any chance of happiness! You need motion, movement, excitement and are attracted to a fired-up person who enjoys a good game or competition as much as you do. It’s important to recognize this and set up healthy forms of play for yourself. Otherwise you may stir up discord just to get a “charge” of energy.

Like the bull, Venus in Taurus is earthy, sensual, slow and deliberate. Taurus is associated with the neck and shoulders; that’s why you love to have them rubbed. You are extremely sensual and affectionate. You enjoy the finer things in life and have expensive taste. Quality is more important than quantity. Keep that in mind and you won’t be such a pack-rat! You need a stable, dependable partner, even if you are not so “together” yourself.
![]()
Gemini is the sign of sparrows and butterflies, and Venus in Gemini will often sample many flowers before settling down. You’re a free spirit and wonderful conversationalist. Venus in Gemini has earned a reputation as the incorrigible flirt. Whether or not that is true of you, you value your freedom and would wither without it. It’s important that your partner understands this about you. Gemini rules the hands— yours are expressive, and you love to have them massaged and held.
![]()
Venus in Cancer wants to nurture and be nurtured in a relationship. Security and emotional bonding are important to you, and it’s very hard to let go of a relationship, even if it’s a bad one. Cancer is a water sign, and water is very soothing to your emotions. Cancer rules the stomach and breasts. (You may draw your own conclusions!) Crabs scurry sideways instead of straight forward. Sometimes this saves you from an uncomfortable situation, but other times it’s important for you to say what you mean, address the issue directly, rather than beating around the bush.

Proud Mary! Fabio! Venus in Leo wants to be admired and adored. Leo is the sign of gold, royalty, and children. The best partners and friends for you are those who will play with you, who encourage that childlike wonder in you. You lavish your partner with compliments and shows of appreciation. Gold, purple, and glitz are your colors. You express yourself dramatically. You need to find an outlet for this in your life, such as painting or theater, or you might create soap opera theatrics in your personal life which can be harmful in your relationships. Leo rules the heart and spine.

Virgo is the sign of the master craftsman. Venus in Virgo wants a relationship that is efficient and “built to last.” It’s your nature to be careful and cautious in your selection of a mate, because you want a solid, down-to-earth partnership that makes life easier for the both of you. It isn’t that you aren’t romantic, it’s just that your way of expressing love is being helpful. Virgo rules the digestive tract. Sorry, but you’ll just have to find somewhere else to be rubbed!

Fairness is the most important thing with Venus in Libra. You want things to balance, give and take. Air is your element, and things of the air are soothing to you— birds, mobiles, incense. Because relationships are so important to you, you tend to put a lot of importance on your partner’s enjoyment or happiness. You’re a good compromiser, and that works for you as long as you don’t compromise your core needs and values. Libra rules the skin and kidneys. (We won’t go there!)

Still waters run deep. That’s Venus in Scorpio. You are attracted to someone with an intense, mysterious look, probably a quiet type. You do not fall in love often or easily. You form very deep bonds. Letting go of a love is difficult for you because it feels like death. But when it’s over, it’s over. Your love life is a series of eras, punctuated by periods of intense change or crisis. You enjoy deep, intense experiences and lovers. You may even provoke a fight, just so you can make up again. Scorpio rules the bowels and genitals.
![]()
Sagittarius is the sign of the traveler, and Venus in Sag usually loves to travel or is drawn to friends and partners from other countries. You love to socialize and visit, and need plenty of time and space to do so, even if you are in a committed relationship. You need a partner who is free and easy; the jealous type isn’t for you. Sag rules the hips and thighs.
![]()
Venus in Capricorn tends to age well, and approaches love purposefully and dutifully. Like Venus in Scorpio, you do not fall in love easily or often. You want stability in your partner, a solid foundation you can count on. Capricorn rules the knees, which may be one of your favorite erogenous zones. You may be in business with your partner, or run your family like a business! Capricorn is tuned in to the passage of time; maybe you have a thing about clocks.
![]()
Venus in Aquarius tends to pick a lover from their circle of friends. You’re not the “swoony” type; you prefer a more easygoing partner. You are able to be objective about your relationships in a way that is refreshing to some people and absolutely unnerving to those who express themselves in a more dramatic or emotional way. You like friends and lovers who are unorthodox and march to their own beat, even if you yourself are a more conventional type.

Pisces is the most psychically sensitive sign of the Zodiac. Love in the sign of the fishes is artistic, otherworldly, floaty; it ebbs and flows like the ocean. Saying no is difficult for you, so you tend to drift out of a relationship rather than break it off. Pisces is the most psychic sign. It’s helpful to realize you can feel other people’s feelings as well as your own. That’s why clarity is hard to come by sometimes, and why spending some time by yourself is very good for you. Pisces rules the feet— yours may be so sensitive that you don’t like them touched. If not, you love for someone to rub them.

Wow that Cancer thing defines me so much and is so true about me.2 · Riley · 16 December 2005
Hi Molly! I am a newbie to your website...and I am addicted! I wish I found you months and months ago, you are so wonderful & easy to understand. Thank you so much.
I just had a quick question about Venus and LOVE...:) I once was into a guy who's Venus was Retrograde when he was born. I ran his chart. Does this signify anything, like is this a challenging thing to have? Or a common one?
Thanks so much for your input. Have a great weekend Molly:)

Hi Molly, I was wondering how to interpret Saturn transiting (natal) Venus in a chart? When Saturn is conjunct Venus, how does this aspect express itself in one’s life? Does it have to do with how relationships in one’s life are being handled? Thank you so much Molly, you are the best.

Hi Britney—Venus is values and money, and Saturn is hard work. So it’s time to get serious about your real values and priorities, where you are putting your resources of time and money. Saturn also tends to bring restrictions, limitations and shortages, so it’s not usually a feel-good time, it tends to bring out any existing problems in relationships. It’s also time to be conservative with money.

Hello Molly. I really enjoy your website, you explain things so wonderfully!
This is interesting, I wanted to tell you & see if it means anything..(Since I’m relatively new to interpreting natal charts)
I just took a look at my fiance’s birth chart just for the hell of it.
I noticed something!!!!!
I have Venus in Leo in my 1st house – 7 degress.
HE has Venus in Aquarius in HIS 1st house too, at the SAME EXACT DEGREE AS MINE! – (7 degrees)
I just thought, whata coincidence that must be?!
Is there a way I can interpret that? Like, does that express itself in our relationship somehow? Just curious…!

Hi Kaui—
Planets in opposite signs in the same degree are said to be in exact opposition. Opposite signs are, well.. opposites which can attract or repel. Since Venus is about beauty and attraction, in the absence of any other planets making harsh aspects, she respresents complementary styles, tastes, and values.
Comparing aspects between two charts like this is called synastry. If you google “venus opposite venus synastry” you’ll probably find some good links.

Venus trines chiron in my chart in late
August this year. My ruling planet is Venus, Sun Gemini. 3 Planets in 9th House. How often does this happen in ones life? In otherwords is it unusual. What does it mean?

Hi Molly,
Only recently found this article- do you think it’s possible for a Venus in Pisces to let go of the need to mother their partners, almost to the level suffocation and to let them have their freedom
Thanks in advance

I am Aries with Gemini in my 9th house. How does this effect me. And am Aries strong in my 7th house, with lilith there also. I know I have a hard time commeting completely.

My Venus in Sag… I always wondered why I seemed to attract (and be attracted to) certain signs…Most of my lovers have been Sag women or had prominant Sag in their charts (Sag moon, Sag rising, ...). Tho, I find their approach to love a bit freer and “too open” than I’d prefer. Must be the possessive Scorp in me
;-)

Hi Molly,
When Saturn went into Virgo, conjunct my natal Venus and my partners’ natal moon, a riff started developing between us. He’s been so emotionally distant and just going through the motions of being in the relationship without actually feeling much. I’ve worked so hard at being a better partner to him, so many changes and improvements I’ve made and he appreciates them all he says but last week he said he just “lost interest” in the relationship and it’s over. I asked him where his heart went, and he said “I don’t know, I guess inside”.
I feel so sad and confused. He had a dream a few months ago that he was at his parents’ home and he couldn’t leave because of a tornado so he couldn’t travel to where I was. He was interpretting the dream to mean he couldn’t be in the relationship, but I just took it to mean he was in a storm of confusion and can’t access his heart (symbolized by girlfriend).
Anyhow, I feel lonely and heart-broken and trying to feel good about my life again. Any advice on romance during this time?

Hi Sandee— I’m sorry for your heartbreak.
Saturn conjunct Venus demands that we face the reality of our love live, and look within rather than without to find our center and sense of self-worth. Good feelings (Venus) are in short supply (Saturn)… Saturn does compel us to pull ourselves together, and taking positive steps, even difficult ones, usually helps to lift the depression a somewhat.
Focus on what’s right for you, right now. And accept the reality that your partner is questioning the relationship. He may come back to you, he may not. It sucks, and it hurts. I know. But this is the reality of the situation at this moment. You need to focus on what you can control right now, and that is you. Saturn transits can be very empowering if you stick to what’s in your realm of possibility instead of placing blame or counting on someone else to fix it.

Hi Molly,
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I have been taking your advice, refocusing myself on my spiritual life and friends and family and trying to keep the love alive in my heart with visualizations, affirmations, meditations, helping others, keeping it flowing within and outwards for everyone. I’m understanding now that he needs a lot of space to do his inner work and that we’re not all that compatible any way, exactly how I felt last summer about him but wasn’t ready to act on it. Last summer we moved in together right when the planets Saturn and Venus overhead were meeting up and having fun with all of our love lives! Guess Saturn just brings the issues more to the surface. Slowly I’m seeing that the break-up is for the best and I’m focusing on being more clear about who I am in my heart and finding the right soul mate match.

Sandee, you are most welcome. And thank you for checking in. Most of the time when I answer a comment, I never hear from the person again. I enjoy the feedback, especially when it’s as positive as yours. :)

Hi Molly
Late this year pluto transiting 2 degrees capricorn will make a transit that exactly conjuncts my natal venus, sextiles natal jupitor (2 Pisces), squares natal saturn (1 libra) and sextiles my natal ascendant (3 scorpio). It would also somewhat oppose my natal uranus at 7 cancer and somewhat square my natal moon at 7 aries. This seems like a lot to me. I am looking for a love relationship and feel I am ready. Can you give me some indication of what to expect and how to prepare?
Thanks I love your site!

Hi Molly,
I’ve been dating a Sun Aries with Venus in Taurus, Moon in Aquarius for about two years. I’m a Sun Libra, Venus in Libra, Moon in Gemini. We started off slow, developing a friendship. He said he wasn’t ready for a relationship. We kept dating. This summer he started to really get into the relationship. I found it hard to relax all the time with him. I always felt like he would bolt at any moment. This past August through now has been rough. He said he couldn’t be in the relationship with me. But wanted to stay friends. We have continued our friendship. We even tried dating again. But I became emotional and picked a fight. He said he felt like he had given me all he could and that that day it was over for him. The only thing left is his friendship with me. He texts me every day and as long as I stay on the friendship side of the net he hangs out and we have a good time. I’m reading that 2009 is supposed to be this great romance year for Libras. I’m torn as to what to do now. How do I handle a situation when I love this man but I don’t want to hurt myself further by hanging in there when I should be letting go. I don’t want to let go of something when I believe in my heart we are so good together when we both let down our guard.
